Retrofitting for Energy Efficiency
Retrofitting for Energy Efficiency
Description
A conference which looks a the building retrofit technologies in a bid to overcome the impact of climate change on Australia’s buildings to lower their carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency and get the most bang for your buck.
Retrofitting for Energy Efficiency Brisbane has been specifically developed to align with the challenges and aims of the City of Brisbane.
In urban areas, building stock accounts for over half the carbon emissions of city and it is essential if we are serious about carbon reduction to act fast and strategically to improve the situation. The most obvious solution to increase energy efficiency is to retrofit our existing buildings and implement renewable energy technologies.
Brisbane and the wider regions have recently had a barrage of natural disasters and the impact of climate change is now meaning that we have to consider the design of our buildings. The unfortunate events of the past year are providing the perfect opportunity to incorporate next generation energy efficient solutions into the existing building stock.

Current Work: Francis Kéré - “Bridging the Gap”
Current Work: Francis Kéré - “Bridging the Gap”
Description
Architect Francis Kéré will present a lecture entitled “Bridging the Gap”.
Kéré is increasingly known for his philosophy of “self-building” in which he works with communities to develop capacity to monitor climactic circumstances and use local materials.
In a discussion of his recent and current projects, which have won both Aga Khan and Holcim Awards, Kéré will consider new ways architects can exchange knowledge with communities and propose new models for practice. In Kéré’s words, “only people who take part in the building process can maintain and spread the word about these architectural projects”. archleague.org/2012/02/francis-kere

The International Convention of Architecture
The International Convention of Architecture
Description
Each year the conference is held with a different theme. For 2012 the theme is “Simply Architecture”.
The theme goes beyond the meaning of simple, simply, simplistic, pure architecture – looking for the origin of built beauty. We will ask if simple architecture is ethically more than minimalism. In this period of uncertainty, the building, the creation itself is more valuable, and utilizes more and more limited resources. Architecture therefore must become more and more respectful and responsible.
Should this or will this lead to simplicity? We want to speak simply on good architecture – as on a species dying out.
The official language at the conference is English (simultaneously translation into Hungarian).
Program
- Lecture of Vincze László (Budapest)
- Lecture of Anu Puustinen (Avanto, Helsinki)
- Lecture of Herwig Spiegl (Alleswirdgut, Bécs)
- Lecture of Dan Phillips (The Phoenix Commotion, Texas)
- Lecture of Stephan Behnisch (Behnisch Architekten, Stuttgart) – Holcim Awards Acknowledgement prize 2005 winner for “Millenium Biologix Headquarters”, Kingston, Ontario, Canada
- Introduction of the site – Virág Csaba introduces the building by late Pázmándi Margit

Green Cities 2012 - THINK
Green Cities 2012 - THINK
Description
At Green Cities 2012 We're Thinking About The Future.
Think business. Think collaboration. Think beyond buildings.
Green Cities, the largest green building conference in Asia-Pacific, comes to Sydney in 2012 and will showcase the best and brightest green building professionals, industry experts and manufacturers for three days of green building conversation, innovation and collaboration.
In 2011, Green Cities got its mojo back, and in 2012 the conference will continue to challenge the green building status quo and push the industry towards better environmental, social and economic outcomes.
The Green Cities program features three distinct conference streams:
[Beyond Buildings] takes environmentally sustainable building to the next level, tackling the political, economic and technical issues facing the industry today and in the next ten years. Join us as we stride toward the next frontier – communities, precincts and cities.
[Spotlight] focuses on the unique challenges and opportunities facing specific sectors and international markets. Bring your expertise to debate and discuss leading case studies which highlight environmentally sustainable design, construction and operational performance.
[Think] is the new home of innovation and inspiration which will explore the key and sometimes contentious issues facing the green building industry. This stream will comprise a combination of short 'n' sharp sessions to share big ideas and longer sessions to explore new and innovative solutions to the built environment’s most pressing issues.

Ecobuild
Ecobuild
Description
Ecobuild is the world’s biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment and the UK’s largest construction event of any kind. The Ecobuild conference features new thinking, challenging ideas and renowned commentators as well as the pressing issues affecting government policy and the construction sector - how to keep the industry profitable, remain committed to a low carbon built environment, and manage the country's economy through a low growth period with record levels of public debt.
Continuing the three stream format for 2012, it engages in big picture debates on international political co-operation, the role of science and technology, and the psychology of climate change, through to more tangible issues such as how the UK construction sector needs to change, the role of architects, refurbishing the existing stock, building more houses, the impact of the Energy and Localism Acts, and the implications of the proposed NPPF.
Ecobuild’s renowned seminar programme offers more than 130 sessions covering the most pressing and important issues for built environment professionals. With the emphasis throughout on delivering practical and applied information, each seminar is structured to provide key learning points, supported by case studies, analysis, and examples of best practice. www.ecobuild.co.uk/conference.html

Architecture and Urban Design 1st International Conference
Architecture and Urban Design 1st International Conference
Description
The conference will consist of parallel sessions and workshops and plenary sessions around the following themes:
- Architectural history and historic preservation - Green building technologies and materials - User-friendly public spaces - Architecture & urban design education - Construction management - Information technology in architecture & urban design
Over the past twenty years, Tirana, the capital of Albania, has evolved into a dense, compact, and vibrant city of almost one million people, full of shops, cafes, restaurants, music, colorful buildings, and street life. At the same time, it is choked with automobile traffic, its older façades are crumbling down, and the traditional housing stock is being eroded to make room for condominium buildings. Sustainable construction technologies are in their infancy. High-tech high-rise architecture is juxtaposed with small scale informal additions to communist-era housing units and pre-communist oriental and Western neoclassic homes. While there is much private wealth in the country, the public sector has limited resources. This set of circumstances makes Tirana a very interesting laboratory for architects and urban designers & planners, and an enjoyable place to visit.
An international audience of about 150 people, including academics, practicing architects, urban designers, and planners, is expected.
